Nature, red in tooth and claw

From Alfred Lord Tennyson's insanely long In Memoriam A. H. H., 1850 (Canto 56) [1]:

Who trusted God was love indeed
And love Creation's final law
Tho' Nature, red in tooth and claw
With ravine, shriek'd against his creed

A notion that comes up in wildlife rehabilitation often, which I'll have to expand on at some point.
